Bill Newman's Ice Bowl

Beertender Discovers a New Sport.

Saturday February 28, 2009

It is on rare occasion that I discover a new sport much less one that I’ve never heard of with a fervent and dedicated following the likes of Frisbee-golf. Mrs. Beertender and I loaded the boys in the van this afternoon and headed up to Franklin Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights to check out Bill Newman’s Ice Bowl, an annual tournament dedicated to the faithful of this strange hybrid competition.

We arrived just after lunch and found a large crowd of folks, each carrying their own sport bags full of Frisbee gear and in the midst of being dispatched to their respective holes by Mr. Bill. There was a nice cache’ of beer from Stone, Southampton and Captain Lawrence, somewhat depleted, so my first impression was that I would like this game, a lot. I hooked the missus up with some ice cream and myself with a bottle of Stone Ruination and then wandered out to embed myself with the first foursome I could find. “The game is played just like ball golf, but with Frisbees” Bill says, and watching the first crew t-off I can see how the game is just like “ball golf”, just like he says, never realizing it was called “ball golf” and not just golf.

The first hole that I came upon (which I think was actually the second hole) was about a three hundred foot par 3. There was a mat on the ground from which the players launched their first shot and I watched as they carefully chose their Frisbees, wiped them down and then tested the wind with some dry leaves that they picked up from the ground. These guys were serious and the first gentlemen to go reprimanded me for standing where he could see me as he readied his shot. After I move he proceeded to slice that shot right into a tree that was about 100 feet away, glancing back at me in disgust. Luckily, there was another group off in the distant woods, so I thanked the first group for their patience and beat feet towards the second with my newly discovered Frisbee-golf etiquette in tow.

The game is played just like the real thing, with spot markers, furthest away shoots first etc., but with a metal cage that catches the Frisbee instead of a hole. The object is to get the Frisbee into the cage with the least amount of tosses and the lowest score overall wins the tourney. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to stick around to see who won because it was a bit blustery, the boys were restless and my lady was freezing her ass off, so we headed out.

I can see that Frisbee-golf would be a whole lot of fun and I’ll be looking forward to the summer circuit, the Sun Bowl maybe. Franklin Roosevelt State Park is beautiful and has a dedicated Frisbee-golf course year round.

EXTREME BEER FEST

NIGHT OF THE BARRELS
at the Cyclorama in Boston, MA
click image to be re-directed to photo gallery

Day 1, the Night of the Barrels in a word, Amazing. It was my hope to have this post up by the end of the night- Last Night! - but the combination of Extreme beer and the barbecued Turkey leg at the Roadhouse in Brookline afterwards had an effect on me that I can only imagine would be like shooting smack.

We sampled tons of great beer last night and I will be reporting on them in the next few days. The big winner for me on Barrel Night, day 1 was Founder’s Brewing Company offering the “Hand of Doom”, their Double Trouble IPA aged in bourbon barrels. It wasn’t that this beer blew away everything else, but it was the most unusual. Some other winners: Lost Abbey’s “Funky Duck” and “Red Poppy Ale” and Veritas 004, Stone’s Cognac-Aged “Double Bastard”, Ithaca’s “Very Old Habit” and Captain Lawrence’s “Fool’s Gold”.

Jackamo IPA Cask!!!

Wednesday February 18th 2009 8PM
Abita Jackamo IPA Cask
@ the GATE

Jockamo is named for the tribes of dancing, singing, chanting “Mardi Gras Indians” who have marched in New Orleans for over 250 years. When you hear the drums, join in the song...“Iko! Iko! Jockamo fe na ne”.
Jockamo I.P.A. is a traditional India Pale Ale made with the best pale and light crystal malts that give the beer a copper color and malty flavor. This full-flavored beer is hopped and dry hopped liberally with Willamette and Columbus hops from the Pacific Northwest and has a 6.5% A.B.V. The spicy aroma of the hops contrasts nicely with the pleasant sweetness of the malts. Jockamo has a flavor that entices and excites the palate. The intense hop character adds more spice to the meal and makes it a perfect choice to team up with many spicy dishes. Cheddar and strong farmer cheeses stand up well to Jockamo’s hoppy character. Jockamo goes well with game, grilled meats and Thai, or Mexican cuisine.

FIELD TRIP!!!

Beertender Takes a Trip
to the Captain Lawrence Brewery
in Pleasantville, NY.

Rosso e Marrone, My Valentine

Rosso e Marrone, was the object of our desire. It was alluring enough to bring a few hundred beer geeks from all over the place to the Captain Lawrence Brewery in Pleasantville, NY on Valentine’s Day. When we showed up at about noon most of the lot was already gone and there was a line stretching out the door. We were informed by several fellow seekers that our chances of scoring a few bottles of the brew were slim to none given the crowd, the amount produced and our spot at the end of the long line… Oh well.

The news wasn’t all bad, I was handed a few bottles of Piraat Golden Ale and a couple of glasses to pour it in and I was offered a chance to buy a bottle by several who had already scored. Mike Burmil, from S.K.I. Distributors, and my buddy Chris Perry extended their generosity. Luckily for me, I had an inside connection and was soon presented with two bottles at cost right about the time we were informed that the beer was sold out, Score.

I made my way into the brewery and was handed a taste of the Rosso, sour ale fermented with grapes and aged in oak barrels, chatted for a while with brewery founder Scott Vaccaro and Blind Tiger man Dave Broderick, then headed back outside. Many of the seekers were heading out to Long Island’s Southampton Brewery to score the other release of the day, the Russian imperial Stout, and I had to fight the temptation to get caught up in the caravan. For the next few hours we stood there in the parking lot of Captain Lawrence and with a few dozen remaining fanatics sampled an amazing array of brews that folks had brought along with them. We contributed a bottle each of Founder’s “Devil Dancer” Triple IPA and Founder’s “Old Curmudgeon” Olde Ale. We sipped on the new Bell’s Hop Slam and Deschutte’s “the Abyss”, Russian River “Beatification” and the Lost Abbey’s “Red Poppy Ale” to name a few. This impromptu tasting was the best surprise of the trip; we were exposed to several brews that you don’t see in NY all that often and this was completely unexpected and quite awesome.

When the time came to split, we had a few guests back to my place in Port Chester which is about 20 minutes from the brewery and we continued the sampling. Brooklyn “Dark Matter” the brown ale aged in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels, Heavyweight’s “Old Salty” vintage 2003 and Sixpoint Brewery’s Grand Cru were the standouts although there were many more.

All in all, it was a great day.

McCue's Big Adventure.

Billy's Wild Ride

click image to be re-directed to photo gallery

Driving through Willets Point’s Iron Triangle makes you feel like you've taken a wrong turn in a Third World country. The streets are a muddy mess, riddled with huge potholes that are filled with nasty looking water. Rough looking "junkyard" dogs roam around freely and huge piles of auto parts are everywhere. Shop workers, mostly Hispanic, wave you in for repair work as you drive by. Ironically, most cars would probably need some work after cruising through this area!

There is an extremely ambitious plan in motion to demolish this entire section of Flushing, Queens and replace the chop shops and other auto-related businesses with bars, restaurants, parking lots, a hotel and convention center and much more – all designed to accommodate the fans heading to the NY Mets’ new Citi Field ballpark. There is a huge job ahead.

There is no sewer system within the Iron Triangle and the entire area is located below the 100-year floodplain. Insurance regulations dictate that any new construction will have to be built at least five feet higher than the current surface level to raise the entire grade of the district and allow for sewage and rainwater run-off into the nearby Flushing River (and elsewhere).

With all the auto parts strewn about and a major waste removal company located in the district, serious environmental degradation issues will also have to be addressed before new construction can begin- but, there's no stopping progress. Despite some organized opposition to the "eminent domain" being cited, private engineering firms and city-related economic development agencies are moving forward with environmental assessment work and district re-design plans. You can see one of them here:

Still, for all the negatives associated with this area, any visitor can't help noticing that there are hundreds of jobs within the Iron Triangle, and dozens of shop owners who will be displaced by the planned development. Proponents of revitalization hope that any workers who lose jobs will be employed by the new businesses when construction is complete.

Despite the problems in the Iron Triangle, the new Citi Field looks great from the outside and should be a very cool place to watch a ballgame. Based on what this observer saw earlier this week (February 10), there's still a fair amount of construction work to be done, but all should be ready by Opening Day. Demolition will also be complete on the old ballpark - Shea Stadium is almost completely gone - there's only one section of the old stadium still standing.
